Dental Therapist (Full-time Position)
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Health, this position will be responsible to promote and provide quality oral health care and participate in the delivery of community health through support, information and linkages to other services. This position will consult with relevant caregivers and significant others to update, modify, or reassess treatment plans and intervention strategies. This role will also enhance the capacity of internal and external stakeholders to address health-related issues. The focus of this position is to build on other community programs focused on preventative care initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES:
The Dental Therapist will provide a broad range of services in the areas of diagnostic assessment, restorative services and preventative care. The Dental Therapist, as a member of the multidisciplinary health team, works with other professionals such as, supervising dentist, dental assistants, community health nurses, diabetes nurse, dieticians and maternal child health team to maintain and improve health.
· Obtain, review and document the medical and dental history of patients.
· General dental services such as:
- Remove plaque and other coatings, such as dental calculus
- Apply anti-bacterial and de-sensitizing agents
- Apply fissure sealants and fluoride
- Replace temporary fillings and crowns
- Polish teeth
- Tooth whitening
- Take radiographs
- Extract deciduous teeth
· Provide assessment and inform the patient/parent in understandable terms about the problem and its significance and involve them in the management of their own care.
· Initiate dental or medical consultations when appropriate.
· Recognize indicators and appropriately refer patient to other dental professionals for care beyond the scope of the dental therapist.
· Provide indirect supervision and direction to dental staff (COHI Aide).
· Provide direct clinical observation and evaluation for dental staff on a regular basis.
· Maintain an updated workplan for the dental program in consultation with dental program staff.
· Authorize, monitor and be accountable for dental program budget expenses and to plan for future expenses of the dental program.
· Teach and communicate effectively at all levels to promote health and prevent oral disease. Develop resources for use in school and community prevention programs.
- School: Orientate school staff about dental program. Provide classroom prevention including oral hygiene instruction and fluoride application, toothbrush program, fluoride program, dental health month promotions.
- Community: Participate in oral health education and assessment at well baby clinics and 4-year screening clinics. Promote Dental Health Month in community and the workplace.
· Participate as a member of the OAFN Health Centre Management Team and regularly attend management meetings to discuss and make decisions about the operations and direction of the OAFN Health Dental Program.
· Provide monthly written reports about the dental program operations to the Director of Health to then be presented at regular monthly Health Board meetings if required.
· Report on the operations of the dental program for Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB/CDB) to First Nations & Inuit Health (Contribution Agreement).
· Report on the community-based operations of the dental program (OHC) for Health Canada, First Nations & Inuit (Cluster Funding).
· Provide other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Post-secondary education in a dental therapy program recognized by the Saskatchewan Dental Therapists Association (SDTA)
· Registration with the SDTA or eligible for registration.
· Three years of experience in a management role and five years of experience in dental industry
· Experience working with First Nations and First Nations Health will be considered an asset.
· Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
· Ability to delegate, set expectations, and monitor progress of all direct reports
· Demonstrated time management skills
· Effective leadership skills, with a strong focus on mentoring and motivation of employees
· A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills
· Ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems
· Ability to remain calm and poised in urgent situations
· Computer proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
OTHER:
· Must possess a current valid Saskatchewan driver’s license, have a dependable vehicle and meet the community insurance requirements
· As a condition of employment must provide:
